My brother, Erik, was diagnosed with muscle cancer in November 1986. A doctor told us that he would amputate Erik's leg below the knee (as the cancer had appeared above his left ankle), give him a year of chemotherapy and save his life. And that's exactly what he did, medically, though at great cost to Erik's spirit.
My Mum had inquired with the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan to find out if Erik qualified for a Wish, as a terminally ill child. He did, and Erik made a Wish to meet Mickey Mouse. His Wish was granted in the last week of January 1987.
By the time his Wish was granted, Erik was - essentially - dying. He'd stopped talking. He had stopped smiling. He'd stopped eating and we were having to force him to take nutrition. However, we didn't know that a Wish could be rescheduled, so off we went on the airplane to Florida! For a week, we had the most magical stay in the Orlando area, and that part was thanks to
Give Kids the World. GKTW set our itinerary where our first visit to the Disney parks was to EPCOT Center. There, a little boy who hadn't talked, smiled, laughed, or
eaten in two months saw Figment (in my icon!) for the very first time. When Erik saw Figment at Journey Into Imagination, he started to
laugh! They say there is healing in laughter and it must surely be true for the next day, Erik asked for scrambled eggs. The hotel was very happy to meet our Wish child's request even though the restaurant itself was closed at the time. After his Wish, he ate six plates of scrambled eggs at a Shriner's breakfast! Erik found his way back to us thanks to the Disney magic and the amazing generosity and kindness of Give Kids the World.
My brother had the "bad of the bad" of his type of muscle cancer and it was amazing that he lived for six years beyond his first diagnosis. To this today, when his physician goes to conferences to speak on treating children with cancer, Dr. Hutchinson tells Erik's story and how the power of Disney and GKTW magic prolonged his life, since there was no medical reason for Erik to have lived as long as he did.
This is why I am participating with
help_gktw, to ensure that GKTW can work their magic for other families and terminally ill children, just as they did for Erik. :)
